Available Talks from the "New Faces of War" Conference, April 5-7, 2013

Here is a preliminary report on the conference on “The New Faces of War,” sponsored by Historians Against the War in Baltimore and Towson, Maryland, April 5-7, 2013. About 150 people took part in the conference, in addition to several dozen who came only to the Friday evening keynote session at St. John’s Church in Baltimore. (The other sessions were at Towson University just outside Baltimore proper, co-sponsored by the university’s College of Liberal Arts.) Attendance was higher than the organizers had expected, and the atmosphere was one of energy and of sharing.

Participation by members of the Baltimore-area activist community was a key to the conference’s success. The Friday evening keynote session, for example, was arranged by Red Emma’s Bookstore Coffeehouse and was-sponsored by a half-dozen other groups (Baltimore Nonviolence Center, Johns Hopkins Human Rights Working Group, Baltimore Pledge of Resistance, Baltimore Phil Berrigan Memorial Veterans for Peace, Casa Baltimore/Limay, Baltimore Higher Education Alliance for Real Democracy, and Baltimore College Peace Network).

Keynote speakers were University of Wisconsin historian Alfred McCoy and Col. Ann Wright, former military officer and diplomat who has become a well-known antiwar activist. Plenary speakers on Saturday included Rashid Khalidi of Columbia University, Nick Turse of TomDispatch.com, John Prados of the National Security Archive, and Carolyn “Rusti” Eisenberg of Hofstra University. The twenty breakout sessions on Saturday and Sunday addressed a wide range of topics related in one way or another to the overall conference theme. Click here for the full schedule.

On this website we will provide access (through text files, audio files, and/or videos) to as many as possible to the talks given at the conference.
